Why custom over ready-made?
The problem with downloading models online is simple: they rarely fit your exact needs. Dimensions slightly off. Doesn't match your use case. Or what you need doesn't exist anywhere. A tailored design solves that — built from your requirements, however specific or unusual. Broken parts, incomplete sketches, photos or verbal descriptions become production-ready designs.
The design journey

Real example: restoring a broken car door lock
1 · Understanding the problem
Examined the broken part carefully — measurements, how it attached, the mechanics of how it should function. Asked the right questions: how should it feel, what materials fit, any constraints.
2 · Initial design & exploration
Built the first digital model from the broken original — but one version isn't enough. Multiple approaches explored: recreate exactly, improve, or take a stronger route. This is where problems get solved before anything is printed.
3 · Refinement through 3D modelling
Every detail refined — curves adjusted for ergonomics, wall thickness optimised for strength, mechanical parts made to fit perfectly. The software tests how everything works before the printer ever runs.
4 · First physical prototype
Printed to evaluate fit, feel and function in the real world — holding it reveals what digital models don't. Different iterations and finishes tested: raw print vs post-processed.
5 · Final design perfection
Adjustments made from the prototype feedback — attachment angle, section thickness, overall mechanics fine-tuned. Every dimension exact, assembly points defined, curves optimised for function and looks.
6 · Production print
Printed on the Bambu Lab X1E. The result: a custom door lock that fit perfectly and worked exactly as needed — without the cost and hassle of finding original parts.

Material matters
Material choice matters — decorative pieces need different properties than functional parts. PLA for most things, PETG for durable and flexible, TPU for parts that bend or absorb impact, carbon/glass-fibre composites for extra strength.
